SEO Interview Questions and Answers (2026): What Hiring Managers Actually Ask

By Ravi Verma, Founder - Pre Tutorials, Hazratganj, Lucknow · Published 26 September 2026

Quick answer: A 2026 SEO interview usually runs in four rounds — a 15–20 minute screening call, an on-page round, a technical round, and a judgement round with whoever owns the traffic number. Freshers are tested on vocabulary and curiosity; two-to-four-year candidates on diagnosis, prioritisation and measurement. Indicative Indian pay at the time of writing runs roughly Rs 12,000–22,000 a month for a Lucknow fresher and Rs 35,000–60,000 for a metro specialist with 2–4 years. The technical round eliminates the most people.

How an SEO interview is actually structured in 2026

Most SEO hiring in India runs four rounds over one to two weeks, not a single quiz. Round one is a recruiter screening for fit and salary. Round two is on-page and content. Round three is technical, and eliminates the most candidates. Round four is with the person accountable for the traffic number, and is almost never about definitions. Off-page and measurement questions surface across rounds two to four, depending on the role. Each answer below is sized to deliver in under 40 seconds, with one line on what is really being tested.

Round 1 — the screening questions

Screening has one job: decide whether you are worth an hour of a senior person’s time, so answer in specifics, never adjectives. Asked what you read, lead with the primary source — the Google Search Central documentation — then an independent publication.

Q. Tell me about an SEO project you have worked on.
Short answer: Name the site, the starting position, what you changed, and what happened over a stated window. An illustrative shape, using your own numbers: a local service site at roughly 900 organic sessions a month, 11 near-duplicate pages consolidated into 4, titles rewritten, internal links fixed, sessions at about 2,100 four months later.
Really testing: whether you can attach a number to your own work, or only describe activity.

Q. How would you do keyword research with no paid tool?
Short answer: Search Console query data, Google autocomplete and People Also Ask, Keyword Planner inside a Google Ads account, competitor titles and H1s, and the site’s internal search log. Group by intent, not volume.
Really testing: budget realism. Plenty of Indian SMB clients will not fund a tool subscription in month one.

Round 2 — on-page and content questions

On-page rounds test whether you understand how a query, a page and a title relate, and most people lose marks on cannibalisation rather than tag length.

Q. Title tag versus H1 — must they match?
Short answer: The title is metadata Google may use to build the result link; the H1 is the heading a visitor reads. They should say the same thing without being identical. Google publishes no character limit — truncation is by pixel width, so roughly 55 to 60 characters is the observed safe range at the time of writing. Google also documents that it may rewrite a title it judges a poor match for the query.
Really testing: whether you know the title is a suggestion, not a guarantee, and whether you quote "60 characters" as a rule or an observation.

Q. What is keyword cannibalisation and how do you fix it?
Short answer: Two or more pages competing for the same intent, so Google keeps swapping which one it ranks and neither builds authority. Diagnose it by filtering one query in Search Console and listing the pages that took impressions. Fix it by consolidating the weaker pages into the strongest with a 301, or re-scoping each to a different intent.
Really testing: whether you reach for data or for a guess.

Round 3 — technical SEO questions

The technical round eliminates more two-year candidates than any other, and usually opens with a diagnosis scenario rather than a definition.

Q. A page is not appearing in Google. Walk me through your diagnosis.
Short answer: In order — is the URL returning 200; blocked in robots.txt; carrying a noindex tag; canonicalised elsewhere; linked internally; in the sitemap; what does URL Inspection report. Content quality comes after all of that, not before.
Really testing: whether you have an ordered checklist or jump straight to "the content needs improving".

Q. Difference between a robots.txt disallow and a noindex tag?
Short answer: Disallow stops crawling; noindex stops indexing. A disallowed page can still surface if other pages link to it, because Google never crawls it and so never sees the noindex. To remove a page, allow the crawl and serve noindex — Google’s robots.txt documentation says so plainly.
Really testing: the most reliable filter question in Indian SEO hiring. Getting it wrong ends the round.

Q. 301 versus 302 versus 307?
Short answer: 301 is permanent and is what you use for consolidation and migrations. 302 and 307 are temporary and signal the original URL should stay indexed. Using 302 for a migration is a common, expensive mistake.
Really testing: migration safety. If they are replatforming, this is the whole interview.

Q. What are Core Web Vitals in 2026?
Short answer: Largest Contentful Paint for loading, Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness, Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability. Google documents INP replacing First Input Delay in March 2024. They use real-user field data, not a lab score, and behave as a small input rather than a decisive one — cite Google’s Core Web Vitals page.
Really testing: whether your knowledge is current. Anyone still saying FID has not read anything since 2023.

Off-page and link questions

Link questions in 2026 are mostly a compliance test in disguise: the interviewer wants to know whether hiring you creates risk. On disavow, say you use it rarely — only for a manual action or a documented attack.

Q. How would you earn 10 links in a month for a Lucknow coaching institute?
Short answer: Local directories and chambers, genuine student and alumni mentions, a small local data asset an education reporter can cite, college partnerships, workshop listings. Then say plainly that 10 quality links in 30 days is ambitious, and you would rather deliver four that matter.
Really testing: whether you will invent a number to please them.

Q. What is your position on paid links and guest posts?
Short answer: Any link exchanged for money or goods must carry a sponsored or nofollow attribute. Google’s spam policies treat undisclosed paid links as link spam. I would not buy followed links for a client site.
Really testing: whether you would expose the company to a manual action.

Analytics and measurement questions

Measurement rounds separate people who report activity from people who report outcomes, and the tell is whether you name the data source behind every number. Asked what you report monthly, lead with organic leads or key events (GA4’s current term at the time of writing), then sessions to money pages, then tracked rankings, then what shipped.

Q. Clicks fell 30 percent but impressions are flat. What happened?
Short answer: Either position slipped within page one, or the layout changed — an AI summary, more ads, a competitor winning sitelinks. Check position by query in the Search Console performance report, and whether the loss sits in a few queries or is spread evenly.
Really testing: whether you separate a ranking problem from a click-through problem.

Q. Why do Search Console and GA4 disagree?
Short answer: They measure different things. Search Console counts clicks on the result; GA4 counts sessions that fired a tag. Ad blockers, consent choices, redirects, bots and time zones create gaps. A 10 to 20 percent discrepancy is normal in our experience; a 70 percent gap is a tagging bug.
Really testing: whether you will panic at a normal discrepancy in front of a client.

The judgement questions that separate two years from five

Judgement questions have no textbook answer — they grade your reasoning, not your conclusion.

Q. You have 40 hours and one neglected site. What first?
Short answer: Four hours on measurement and crawl access, so every later hour is decidable. Then indexation and cannibalisation, which free value that already exists. New content last, because it pays back slowest.
Really testing: prioritisation under constraint, which is the actual job.

Q. A client wants rank one for a head term in 30 days.
Short answer: Say no, then give a real alternative. A new site on a competitive head term typically takes 6 to 12 months in our experience. Propose long-tail and location-modified terms that can move in 30 to 90 days, plus paid search for the gap.
Really testing: whether you can refuse a client without losing them.

Q. Traffic is up 40 percent and leads are flat.
Short answer: The traffic is probably the wrong intent. Segment organic landing pages by key events, check whether growth came from informational pages with no path to enquiry, then add a conversion path or shift effort to commercial-intent queries.
Really testing: whether you segment before you speculate.

Q. What is your policy on AI-written content?
Short answer: Production method is not the issue; helpfulness and originality are, which is how Google’s helpful content guidance frames it. I use AI for outlines and drafts, and keep a human responsible for claims and numbers.
Really testing: whether you have a workflow or a slogan. Our post on whether SEO is dead in 2026 covers how AI summaries are shifting click behaviour.

Fresher versus two-to-four years: what actually changes

The question list overlaps heavily between levels; what changes is the depth of evidence expected behind each answer.

Dimension Fresher (0–1 year) Specialist (2–4 years)
What they test Vocabulary, curiosity, any real site experience Diagnosis, prioritisation, measurement, client handling
Proof expected A practice blog or live Search Console property Before-and-after numbers with dates, and the decision behind them
Technical depth Knows what robots.txt, noindex and 301 mean Can debug an indexation drop and brief a developer
Typical failure Memorised definitions, no site experience Activity described, no outcome attached
Rounds 2 to 3 3 to 4, often with an audit task

The five answers candidates get wrong most often

In the mock panels we run at Pre Tutorials, five errors cause most two-year-level rejections.

  • Confusing disallow with noindex. Asked constantly, fatal when missed.
  • Quoting "200 ranking factors". A decade-old paraphrase, not documentation. Refer to Google’s described ranking systems instead.
  • Treating a third-party authority score as a Google metric. Those are vendor estimates, useful for relative comparison and nothing more.
  • Calling bounce rate a ranking factor. Google has said repeatedly that it does not use it, and GA4 does not define it as the old property did. Talk about engagement rate and key events.
  • Reporting effort instead of outcome. "I built 60 backlinks" is not an answer. "Referring domains went 24 to 51 and the page moved from position 18 to 7 in five months" is.

How to talk about a campaign that failed

Every senior interviewer asks for a failure, and they want a decision you got wrong, not a circumstance that went against you.

Use four sentences. One: what you decided and why it looked right then. Two: what happened, with a number and a window. Three: how you found out, and how long that took. Four: the rule you follow now. Ours, for example — a migration where we consolidated too aggressively, lost roughly a third of long-tail impressions in six weeks, caught it in Search Console, and now never merge pages holding distinct ranking queries without exporting 90 days of query data first.

Two traps. Do not pick a failure that was entirely someone else’s fault — that reads as deflection. And do not pick one with no recovery: they are buying your response pattern, not your perfection.

What to ask the interviewer

Your questions are graded too, and asking about publishing authority is the fastest way to sound like someone who has shipped work.

  • Who can publish without a developer, and do SEO tickets get developer time or queue behind product?
  • What does success look like at 90 days, and who defines it?
  • Has the site ever had a manual action or a big traffic drop?
  • Which tools are paid for, and is there budget for content and PR?

Indicative SEO salary bands in India

The ranges below are our own observation from job postings we track and what Pre Tutorials alumni report at the time of writing — indicative, not a promise. Offers vary widely by city, company type and whether the role includes paid media.

Role Experience Indicative metro range (monthly) Lucknow, typically
SEO Trainee / Intern 0–6 months Rs 8,000 – Rs 15,000 Often a stipend only
SEO Executive 0–2 years Rs 15,000 – Rs 30,000 Rs 12,000 – Rs 22,000
SEO Analyst / Specialist 2–4 years Rs 35,000 – Rs 60,000 Rs 25,000 – Rs 45,000
SEO Lead / Manager 5–8 years Rs 60,000 – Rs 1,20,000 Rs 45,000 – Rs 80,000

Two honest notes. In our observation Lucknow and most tier-two cities sit roughly 25 to 40 percent below Bengaluru, Gurugram and Mumbai for the same title, which is why remote roles are worth targeting once you have two years of evidence. And nobody, us included, can guarantee a job or a salary. Pre Tutorials offers placement support: portfolio building, interview preparation and referrals. Treat any institute advertising a guaranteed placement as a warning sign, and ask them to put it in writing. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common SEO interview questions for freshers?

Expect: what is SEO and how does a search engine work; on-page versus off-page; what is a title tag; what is a backlink; what is robots.txt; which tools you have used. The questions are basic, so the differentiator is a live Search Console property for a site you actually run, however small. In fresher interviews we have observed, one real property beats a certificate.

How do I answer the SEO interview question about my weakness?

Pick a genuine technical gap you are actively closing, not a humblebrag. Log file analysis or hand-writing schema are safe examples. Say what you are doing about it and by when. Avoid a weakness that disqualifies you for this role — do not tell an analytics-heavy team that spreadsheets intimidate you. Honesty plus a dated plan reads as maturity.

Do SEO interviews include a practical task or test?

Frequently, at the two-year level and above. Usual formats: a short audit of a site they name, a content plan for one page, or a live screen-share diagnosing a drop in Search Console. Ask how long it should take and whether it is paid. A task demanding 15 hours of free strategy for a live client site is a red flag worth naming.

Is SEO still a good career in India in 2026?

In our experience entry-level volume has tightened while demand for people who can diagnose and measure has held up, partly because AI summaries have changed click patterns on informational queries. The most durable roles combine SEO with analytics, content or paid media. Nobody can promise a job in any channel, so build evidence on a real site, not a certificate.

How should I explain a gap in my SEO work history?

State the gap plainly with dates, say what you did during it, then move to what you built. If you kept a site, a freelance client or a practice project running, lead with that and show the numbers. Interviewers in our experience care far less about the gap than whether you stayed current. A candidate who can name what changed in search during that period clears it fast.

What salary should a fresher ask for in an SEO interview in Lucknow?

An indicative ask for a Lucknow fresher at the time of writing is Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 a month, with metro roles typically higher. Give a range rather than one figure, say it is negotiable for the right learning environment, and ask what band the role is budgeted at. Never quote a number you have not checked against current local postings.
