Complete it and LinkedIn adds the credential to your Licenses and Certifications section under a co-branded name. Two honest warnings. First, DeepLearning.AI's short courses (including the widely recommended ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers) are excellent and free, but at the time of writing they issue no certificate. If a certificate is your goal, do not start there; if skill is your goal, start there immediately.
Second, prompt engineering as a standalone job title has cooled considerably since 2024. What has not cooled is prompt engineering as a multiplier on an existing skill: a marketer who prompts well ships several times the campaign output. Learn it attached to a job, not as a job. Three traps cost Indian learners the most time in 2026, and none are obvious from a course landing page.
Trap 1 — the NPTEL exam fee. NPTEL and SWAYAM courses from IITs and IISc are free to study and carry genuine academic weight. The certificate, however, requires a proctored in-person exam with a fee of roughly Rs 1,000 at the time of writing, at a scheduled centre on a fixed date. Plan for that from week one, because the enrolment and exam windows sit months apart.
Trap 2 — the audit wall. On Coursera and edX, "enrol for free" and "free certificate" are different promises. In our experience, learners routinely complete roughly 80 percent of a course before discovering the graded quiz is locked. Check the certificate line on the pricing box before hour one, and apply for financial aid on day one rather than day thirty.
Trap 3 — the guarantee. Any institute in India promising a job, a placement or a specific salary in exchange for a fee is making a claim it cannot practically honour. We say this as an institute that sells courses: we offer placement support — portfolio review, interview preparation, referrals — and nothing beyond, because nothing beyond is honest. Walk away from a "100 percent placement guarantee", free course or paid.
A free AI certificate does exactly three useful things in an Indian job application in 2026, and it is worth being precise about them.
